Stop overbuilding: reading the economy in tower defence

March 19, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

After a hundred tower defence runs across different games, the pattern is always the same. New players lose because they spend everything immediately and have nothing left when the hard wave lands.

Think of your resource pool as a curve, not a wallet to empty. Early waves are cheap to clear, so bank a little and let one strong tower do the work instead of scattering five weak ones.

Watch where the pressure actually comes from. In most lane-based games the armoured enemies arrive in predictable spots. Save your upgrade money for a single overpowered tower on that lane rather than spreading thin everywhere.

The last habit worth building is the pre-wave scan. Use the plan phase to look at what's coming, not just what's on screen now. Games like Ironroot Legion practically hand you the enemy composition if you bother to check.

Do this and you'll clear stages that felt impossible, without touching your actual tower placement at all.
